A Bosch Expert drill bit set is Bosch’s top accessory tier for professional users. It is worth buying when you drill hard materials often (stainless steel, reinforced concrete, porcelain) or need bits that last through repeated daily use. For general wood, mild steel and occasional masonry work, Bosch’s standard professional-tier sets or a plain HSS-G set do the same job for less money. The label matters less than what is inside the case, so this guide breaks down the tiers, the HSS grades and the big mixed sets.

What we cover
How Bosch names its accessory tiers
Bosch renamed its professional accessories a few years ago, and the naming still causes confusion, especially because it differs by region:
- Expert: the premium professional tier, aimed at trades that drill all day and at hard or mixed materials. It includes items like the Expert Multi Construction bits and premium SDS-plus bits.
- Pro / “Bosch Professional” accessories: the standard trade tier, sold alongside Bosch’s blue professional power tools. These are solid everyday bits at a mid-range price.
- DIY accessories: sold with Bosch’s green home tools. They are fine for occasional use and less tolerant of heat and abuse.
- North America: Bosch accessories are usually sold by bit type rather than tier: black oxide, titanium-coated, cobalt, Bulldog SDS-plus and Daredevil spade bits. Expert-branded items exist but are less common on US shelves.
So a “Bosch professional drill bit set” might mean either a Pro-tier European set or simply a Bosch set sold for trade use in the US. Read the bit material on the packaging. It tells you more than the tier name.
HSS grades: what you are paying for
Most Bosch metal-drilling sets use high-speed steel (HSS). The grade and how the flutes are made decide how a bit performs:
| HSS type | How it is made | Heat tolerance | Best materials | Relative price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HSS-R (rolled) | Flutes rolled, often black-oxide finished | Moderate | Wood, plastic, thin mild steel, aluminum | Low |
| HSS-G (ground) | Flutes ground from solid hardened stock | Good | Mild steel, cast iron, non-ferrous metals | Medium |
| HSS-TiN coated | HSS with a gold titanium-nitride coating | Good while the coating lasts | Mixed metals, reduced friction | Medium |
| HSS-Co (about 5% cobalt) | Cobalt alloyed through the steel, ground flutes | High | Stainless steel, hard alloys | High |
One practical point: a coating wears off the cutting lip, but cobalt is alloyed all the way through. Resharpening a TiN bit removes the coating at the edge. Resharpening a cobalt bit keeps its heat resistance. For anyone who drills stainless regularly, cobalt is the grade that pays back.
Expert vs. Pro vs. plain HSS set: head-to-head
| Factor | Expert tier set | Pro tier set | Generic HSS-R set |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical price range (13–25 pieces) | $60–$150+ | $30–$80 | $15–$35 |
| Point geometry | Split point, usually 135°, self-centering | Split point on most sizes | Often 118° standard point |
| Stainless steel | Suitable (cobalt-grade metal bits) | Possible with care and lubricant | Not recommended |
| Case quality | Rigid case with labeled slots | Rigid case | Varies |
| Who it suits | Daily trade use, hard materials | Regular trade and serious DIY | Occasional wood and soft metal |
The big mixed sets (including the 91-piece kits)
Searches for a “Bosch 91 piece drill bit set” usually refer to Bosch’s large mixed drill-and-drive kits. These combine twist bits, masonry bits, wood bits and screwdriver bits in one carry case. They make sense as a first kit for a new homeowner. They are rarely the best value for someone who already owns a driver bit set.
Typical contents of a set in the roughly 90-piece range:
- HSS twist bits in common sizes from about 1/16″ to 1/4″ (or 1.5–6 mm)
- A handful of masonry bits, usually 3/16″ to 5/16″
- Brad-point or spade bits for wood
- Many 1-inch screwdriver insert bits (Phillips, slotted, square, Torx)
- A magnetic bit holder, a few nut setters and sometimes a countersink
The catch: in a 91-piece kit, well over half the pieces are usually 1-inch driver inserts, and the twist bits are often rolled HSS rather than ground. Count the drill bits specifically, not the headline piece count, when comparing kits.
Which Bosch set fits your work
| Situation | Recommended set type |
|---|---|
| New homeowner, mixed small jobs | Large mixed drill-and-drive kit |
| Woodworker drilling pilot holes and some aluminum | HSS-G or black-oxide twist set, 1/16″–1/2″ in 1/64″ or 1/32″ steps |
| Metal fabricator or HVAC tech | Cobalt (HSS-Co) set, split point |
| Installer drilling tile, masonry and wood on the same job | Expert Multi Construction set |
| Concrete anchors daily | SDS-plus set (separate from twist bits) |
Getting full life out of any Bosch HSS bit
- Slow down for bigger and harder. In mild steel, a 1/4″ bit runs around 1,000–1,500 rpm, a 1/2″ bit around 400–700 rpm, and stainless roughly half those speeds. Blue chips and a squealing bit mean you are running too fast.
- Use cutting fluid in steel. It cuts heat at the cutting lips, which is where HSS bits fail first.
- Keep steady pressure. Letting the bit rub without cutting work-hardens stainless and dulls the edge fast.
- Replace the small sizes separately. 1/8″ and 9/64″ bits break most often. Buying them in packs of two or more costs less than replacing the whole set.
- Return bits to their labeled slots. Bits rattling loose in a case chip each other’s cutting edges.
Verdict
Buy Bosch Expert when your materials are hard or your drilling is daily, especially stainless steel and mixed tile-masonry work. Choose the Pro tier or a ground HSS set for general workshop metal and wood. Pick a big mixed kit, such as a 91-piece case, only if you also need the driver bits and accessories it includes. In every case, the bit material and point angle printed on the case matter more than the piece count.
